Qatar Tribune has given the news on its first page today. The news is read as follows:Turkey hails Qatar's support for its fight against terror
Turkey's Ambassador to Qatar, HE Ahmet Demirok on Thursday expressed his country's gratitude to Qatar for supporting Turkey's air strikes in Northern Iraq targeting Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants.
He said Qatar had reiterated its support for his country's actions, and in a statement had described the strikes as"measures to protect its (Turkey's) borders and preservation of its security and stability". It shows Qatar's accurate grasp of the underlying reasons for the strikes, the Turkish Ambassador said.
Speaking at a briefing to discuss Turkey's campaign and its underlying reasons, Demirok said,"I would particularly like to thank Qatar for its continued support of Turkey, especially when it comes to fight against terrorists. Once again, this demonstrates that these two brotherly countries are very close and in agreement about a great many positions which concern the Middle East region."
The Ambassador underlined the continuity of the air strikes targeting PKK with Turkey's previous positions and actions, emphasising that his country has always been unequivocally opposed to terrorism, especially (and justifiably) when this threatens its own security and integrity.
"Turkey has long been a country which opposes and fights terrorism. Daesh and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are of particular concern here. Turkey initiated air attacks on Daesh targets in Syria after a suicide bomber attacked Suruc, in Turkey on July 20, killing 32 persons and wounding more than 100," he said.
Turkey fights terrorism
"In parallel efforts, and while we have been fighting Daesh, PKK has increased the number of their terrorist attacks. On July 22, PKK killed 2 police officers in their apartments. Since then, PKK has intensified its terrorist activities. As a result, Turkey embarked on efforts to respond to all of these organisations," the ambassador added.
According to Demirok, difference between Turkey's armed confrontations with Daesh and PKK is that the latter is a more immediate and urgent threat to Turkey's stability and its people's security."We particularly need to focus on PKK activities and Turkey has actually been fighting against PKK for a long time. In recent months, PKK has proved to be a major threat to Turkey's security, attacking security personnel, damaging pipelines, railways and electricity infrastructure," he added.
The Ambassador stressed that the recent stop of strikes against Daesh was a decision by the coalition fighting the group and headed by the United States. He said,"Turkey has halted its attacks against Daesh on the request of the US and we will continue to take necessary measures in full compliance with international obligations and the rule of law."
