Cumhuriyetimizin 88. yıldönümü vesilesiyle gerçekleştirilen resepsiyonda yapılan konuşma

H. Emre YUNT 29.10.2011
Excellency Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry
Excellencies Ambassadors,
Distinguished guests,

I would like to thank His Excellency Minister of Energy and Industry for being with us to share this special evening.

It is a great pleasure to welcome you all. This beautiful evening we are celebrating the 88th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic of Turkey. My wife and I would like to express our sincere thanks for your gracious presence. I convey my warmest greetings and very best wishes to all Turks residing in Qatar.

This joyous occasion, is overshadowed by the recent earthquake in the Van Province, country's most earthquake-prone region. Turkey is coping with the rescue operation and temporary rehabilitation. Rebuilding the devastated area will follow soon. I seize this opportunity to thank the Government of Qatar and other friendly countries who offered emergency aid materials immediately after the quake.

Distinguished guests,

On this historic and a glorious day in our national life, I would like to pay tribute to the founder of the Republic the great reformer Kemal Ataturk, father of the Turks.

Today, Turks can look back with a great sense of satisfaction and pride at the tremendous achievements reached through consistent and concerted efforts to rebuild and develop the nation. They can be proud of its democratic, secular political system and robust free market economy. This is the reason why Turkey represents a model of democracy on the regional stage.

Turkey has undergone a profound economic transformation in recent years and, despite the global financial uncertainties, had shown a remarkable performance as the country's GDP grew 9 percent in 2010 and 10.2 percent in the first half of this year. Now it is the 16th largest economy in the world; the sixth strongest economy in Europe; and is poised to be among the top 10 by 2023. The collective determination of the Turkish people is essential to sustain this positive momentum.

As a dynamic and responsible member of today's globalized world, Turkey pursues a multi-dimensional foreign policy that contributes to enhancing security and stability in its region and beyond. In order to attain its national and international objectives, Turkey has adhered to the principles of good relations and cooperation with its neighbors and all countries, and has contributed to international peace, stability, security and prosperity.

One of the wider issues, of course, is the Arab Spring, which has arrived at the doorsteps of Turkey. The struggle for liberation, freedom, self-determination and dignity is a universal endeavor. Given the deep historical and cultural ties with the countries and peoples of the region, Turkey feels it a moral responsibility to actively contribute to the efforts to transform the region into one of lasting peace, and, therefore, stands by the legitimate democratic aspirations of the people of the region. It should be a region of stability, fast economic growth and development with higher living standards. It should also be a region free of terrorism. All members of the international community should shoulder their responsibility to this end.

On Turkey-Qatar bilateral relations, our relations rest on the bedrock of genuine friendship and fraternity. Turkey has always enjoyed deeply-rooted historical, cultural, and social ties with Qatar. The two countries have made great strides in bilateral relations that have truly become multi-faceted and would continue to grow and flourish in depth and dimension to the mutual benefit of the two people in the days ahead.

High level visits have been a key aspect of further consolidating the excellent relations that exist between the two countries. Turkey and Qatar share identical views on regional and international issues and our bilateral relations have entered into a new phase of promoting regional stability and peace.

Bilateral trade between Turkey and Qatar is hovering around 400 million dollars, which does not reflect to the true potentials of the two countries. In order to boost bilateral trade to its desired level, business meetings should be more frequent, more organized and result-oriented. Working closely with the business communities of the two countries, My Embassy will continue to exert more efforts in promoting mutual trade and investment. Similarly, Turkey’s position as a major transit country between oil and gas producing and consuming regions could be of particular importance.

Under the wise and visionary leadership of His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Qatar has witnessed momentous changes. It is the world’s richest country now. I wish my Qatari brothers and sisters ever greater prosperity, peace and progress.

I invite our honorable guests to join me listening to the national anthems and in cutting the cake. I thank you all again for being with us tonight. Please have a good time and enjoy the rest of the evening.

Cumhuriyet Bayramınız Kutlu Olsun.
