Speech By He Ambassador Ahmet Demirok Addressed To Turkish And Qatari Businessmen
Distinguished Members of Business Society, Dear Press Members,
At the outset, I would like to express my sincere gratitude and respect to the Turkish people martyred and wounded during the night of military coup attempt took place in Turkey on 15 July. May Allah rest their souls in Cennah.
It is my distinct pleasure to address such a distinguished audience.
This meeting aims to brief business circles in Qatar about the current business environment in Turkey, especially in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt.
Let me state in the beginning that Turkey is much stronger today than it was before July the 15th. Turkish people acted as “one” regardless of their origin, ethnicity, sect or worldview. Turkish democracy proved its credentials. Turkish people boldly united and bravely shielded their bodies against tanks and planes.
Briefly, what happened that night?
In a bloody effort to overthrow the legitimate government and the elected president of Turkey, members of a cell linked toGulenistTerrorist Organization (FETO) attempted to stage a coup. They blocked the roads and bridges, invaded the airports, media outlets and government buildings, and more shockingly fired at innocent people who were demonstrating against this heinous initiative. First time in our history, Turkish parliament was bombed by hijacked warplanes.
The putschists miscalculated one thing. Turkish people were not ready to give up on their country. Upon the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, news spreaded via social media and gallant citizens took over the streets. By dawn, soldiers that fired at the innocent civilians were putting down their arms and surrendering.Thecoup had failed.
Democracy was protected by ordinary citizens that had gathered to oppose the coup. All political parties united in condemningthe failedcoupby issuing a Joint Declaration.Once again, Turkish democracy had proved its credentials to all.
This was the picture of a nation that stood up against terrorist attack. Turkish people, as any other people, want a stable political system and welfare for themselves and for their generations.
This stance will also have an economic meaning. A stable political system in democracy with functioning institutions and the rule of law will definitely bring a better climate for economic activity. Having firmly held to their freedom, Turkish people showed that they knew the value of their growing economy. For the last 14 years Turkish economy grew markedly. The increasing living standards are very visible in all over the country.
There is a state of emergency in Turkey now. But this is only targeting the cells of FETO members within the bureaucracy. It has no impact on market economy, neither on the daily life of those living in Turkey. Fundamental rights and freedoms are secured. All the markets are functioning as usual. There are no constraints on trade and investments. Turkish ports and customs are operating normally. Production and construction sectors are expanding. In the overall, the economy has not been affected by the coup attempt. The ongoing process of restructuring the government will further support the stability and thus the economy of the country. Well-known rating institutions have confirmed strength of the Turkish economy by keeping the Turkey as investable market.
So, keep trusting in Turkey. I encourage all of you, all of our Qatari brothers to continue investing in Turkey. You will gain. This is a strong economy with positive indicators. These will be outlined more by our experts in a few minutes.
Before I end up, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Qatari people and its leaders. We have witnessed such a great solidarity. HH the Emir was the first leader to call President Erdoğan and expressed support to our government and Turkish people. HE the Prime Minister also called our Prime Minister and stated that Qatar is shoulder to shoulder with the legitimate government of Turkey. HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visited Turkey to demonstrate Qatar’s support to Turkey. We have also seen on social media that many Qatari brothers and sisters expressed support to Turkey.
We will not forget this support.
I want to assure all Qataris that Turkey stands strong and united than any time in recent history. The failure of this heinous attempt proved that freedom and the rule of law are constants in Turkey that cannot be destroyed by force. I believe that this is promising to Turkey as well as to a region that has been captive to instability and turmoil for a long time.
I thank you very much for your attention.
